A black box (in most cases) will not overcome a hot boat. it's purpose in life is to control the downriggers reaction to the boat. the best practice for fiberglass boats is that all metal fittings below water line should be "bonded" which means they are all tied together on a ground plane.. The ground, or neutral, is a current carrying conductor, and is the source of many troubles because people do not regard it as such. the grounding, bond or green wire is the "safety" intended to channel current safely to ground in the event of a short circuit.. As far as i know fiberglass makes a poor ground. the negative term. of the battery is ground. poor ground causes so many irrating problems with anything electrical so i have wired my boat with a common ground wire right around and used buss bars under the dash in the bow & stern to ensure i have good ground..
